Iran’s top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was assassinated in the Tehran suburb of Damavand late Friday, Nov. 27 (Tehran time).
According to published reports, Fakhrizadeh was killed when gunmen on a motorcycle pulled up next to his car and opened fire with machine guns.
Another car carrying members of his security team was blown up with an explosive device.
Fakhrizadeh was an officer in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and taught physics at the Imam Hussein University in Tehran.
Israeli intelligence considered Fakhrizadeh to be the mastermind behind Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
According to published reports, the targeted attack will make it difficult for the incoming administration “in the final days of the Trump administration.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif tweeted that Western countries should “end their shameful double standards & condemn this act of state terror”. But his tweet was met with silence.
The White House, Pentagon, State Department, CIA and Joe Biden’s transition team all declined to comment.
