Police on Saturday arrested Chief Elections Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) in connection with allegations of criminal conduct relating to the March 2 general and regional elections.

Police Headquarters in a statement Saturday said that Lowenfield was arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown and put several allegations to him in the presence of his Attorney.

“After being told of the allegations, Mr. Lowenfield exercised his right to remain silent. Thereafter, a confrontation was held between him and a witness and once again Mr. Lowenfield opted to remain silent,” the Police report noted.

According to the statement, having concluded other aspects of the investigative process, Lowenfield was released on station bail on the condition that he reports to the CID Headquarters on September 28, 2020.

“The Police are continuing their investigations,” the Police statement concluded.

Lowenfield is already before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for private criminal charges which were filed by People’s Progressive Party (PPP) member Desmond Morian and Member of The New Movement, Daniel Josh Kanhai relating to fraud, misconduct in office and breach of the public’s trust by providing results of the March 2 elections which he knows to be false.

But the Police had announced on August 21 that it will launch a “comprehensive investigation” into allegations of criminal conduct by Lowenfield and Returning Officer of Region Four Clairmont Mingo.

Lowenfield and Mingo are accused of providing fraudulent results of the March elections to give the APNU+AFC a victory.

The results of the elections were finally announced on August 2 after a five-month delay.
